Traffic is moving at speed, stopping places are limited, and on the smart motorway sections of the M4 through Berkshire there is no permanent hard shoulder to pull onto. That changes what you should do, and it changes how recovery has to be arranged.

M4 through Berkshire
Our core stretch runs from J8/9 at Maidenhead, through J10 for Wokingham and Bracknell, J11 for Reading and the A33, and J12 at Theale, out to J13 at Chieveley where the M4 meets the A34. Much of this length is smart motorway, so the hard shoulder is either a running lane or absent altogether.
M3, A34 and A404(M)
We also attend the M3 around J6 and J7 for Basingstoke, the A34 running north from Chieveley towards Oxford, and the A404(M) link between the M4 and the M40 near High Wycombe. These carry a lot of the same long-distance traffic as the M4.
Driver location signs
Every few hundred metres you will see a small blue sign with three lines: the road number, the direction of travel, and the distance in kilometres. That is the most precise position you can give us, and it is what National Highways works from too.
Services and slip roads
Vehicles that will not restart at Reading Services, at a filling station on a slip road, or in a junction lay-by are straightforward for us to reach, and are far safer places to wait than the carriageway itself.

Questions about motorway recovery.
Move left towards an Emergency Refuge Area or a slip road if the vehicle is still moving. If you can stop safely and get out on the left, get behind the barrier and stand well back from the carriageway. If you cannot leave the lane you are in, stay belted in with hazards on and call 999.
Not directly. A live lane has to be closed or made safe by National Highways and the police first. Call 999, and they will coordinate the road closure. Once the carriageway is safe, SureWay recovers the vehicle.
An Emergency Refuge Area is a marked orange lay-by set back from the running lanes on a smart motorway, usually with an orange SOS telephone. It is the safest place to stop if you cannot leave the motorway. Use the SOS phone to report your position, then call for recovery.
